The Cape Floral Kingdom is the smallest and most threatened of the world’s 6 Floral Kingdoms. 70% of the Cape Floral Kingdom‘s species is found no where else in the world and we are fortunate to have such an abundance of fynbos in the Overberg. Flower Valley Conservation Trust is a locally based organisation focused on protecting fynbos by providing fynbos harvesting guidelines while involving communities in clearing alien vegetation. Those with an appreciation for our natural flora only need to look around them to find pleasure in viewing a variety of ericas, proteas and restio. Visit the following places for a fine fynbos experience:
- Hermanus cliff path – view coastal fynbos while whale spotting from June to November
- Fernkloof Nature Reserve, Hermanus
- Harold Porter Botanical Gardens
- Flower Valley farm situated between Stanford and Gansbaai with a variety of trails and guide options
- Kogelberg Biosphere – a UNESCO world heritage site dedicated to biodiversity
