Privileged to spend an autumn Monday afternoon in Cape Town I needed to try a new eatery – something WOW. The friendly guys at Soho Seafood re-directed me to Chef’s Warehouse & Canteen that is on Heritage Square in Bree Stree and not behind the Cape Quarter like I thought. Exactly where Caveau used to be is now a tiny venue maximising space with long tables and small stool seats. With food products decorating the walls and an adjacent room filled with recipe books and cooking gadgets my attention was diverted from gawking at every tray of food served.
We were guided to choose the tapas for 2 and could not be more pleased with this recommendation that arrived promptly. The flavours matched the beautifully plated appetizers. Although there was no Hemel-en-Aarde wine listed we had a glass of Iona’s Mr P Pinot Noir, winner of a gold at the 2015 Wine Label Design Awards. This elegant Elgin Pinot hit the spot and matched our tapas perfectly. So perfectly that even the afternoon traffic was manageable.
PS – Don’t bother to book. They don’t take bookings.
