Encouraged by the #TourismForAll campaign to discover tourism opportunities in my neighbourhood I explored the potential of music tourism on the 7th day of September – Tourism Month.

Sometimes opportunity for an outing comes from unexpected sources.  Listening to a live performance at the local high school is not something I would normally do on a Wednesday night.  Thanks to a friend with her finger on the pulse I was invited to an evening of SA Idols winner Elvis Blue’s music at the tiniest of theatres – The Blêr Theatre – at Hermanus High School. We took a killer picnic along – again complements of friend – and sat on the veranda meeting up with locals before the show. Not leaving the wine behind I took a bottle of organic Reyneke 2014 Red, a blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.  The organic element was in honour of my friend’s clean eating approach. The smooth red went down well before the show started.

Elvis Blue connected with the audience by sharing family stories and playing a mix of rock and contemporary Afrikaans songs.  The theatre was filled to the brim.  No need for me to drive to Cape Town to see a show.  Thanks to the inspirational Amanda Reinke who’s behind Blêr Cape Whale Coast residents can look forward to a full and varied programme almost on our doorstep.
