It’s almost time for the ABSA Cape Epic and excitement is rising as the race will once again take place in and around Hermanus. Not one but two of the stages will see cyclists pedaling out of our town. Many locals are involved in the race either as cyclists, hosts, crew or making sure the tracks are all good.  One resident artist can lay claim to being involved in every stage of every Cape Epic. Terry Kobus of Originals Art Gallery in Harbour Road Hermanus has been involved with this epic organisation since his days as a mountain biker with a digital presence as Spinman. The Spinman website was the website on mountain biking and the place to promote the start of what was then an unknown adventure race. Cape Epic founder Kevin Vermaak asked Terry to introduce the new event concept to Spinman’s mountain biking community in exchange for an entry to the race. Terry proceeded to cycle three races and then continued as crew. This year he will be the media host of the world’s biggest adventure mountain bike race which he describes as a “well oiled machine that travels across the landscape to pop up in town totally self-sufficient”.

Terry has applied his Cape Epic memorabilia to good use and has decorated his Originals Gallery with jerseys of the events. This echoes the Hermanus First Friday theme to conjure some excitement about the upcoming event. We look forward to an #untamed event to celebrate the excitement of sport.

The ABSA Cape Epic will start on 19 March at Meerendal and move to Hermanus the afternoon. Stage 1 will take off from Hermanus on 20 March and cyclist return to Hermanus for Stage 2.  The race then moves to Greyton and then Elgin before finishing at Val de Vie. http://www.cape-epic.com
