Gansbaai is just less than an hour’s drive south from Hermanus. It’s a slow drive as the road is windy and a little bumpy at times. The journey takes one through beautiful fynbos landscapes and past a few of the Overberg’s fine wine estates. Halfway through the ride is the heritage town of Stanford where a coffee and pastry at Die Ou Meul make the travel worth it.
Upon arrival in Gansbaai the harbour must be the main highlight. There’s another harbour. One that sees more action. That’s Kleinbaai – home to the South African shark cage diving industry. You don’t need to go out on a boat to appreciate the adrenaline rush experienced by visitors. Judging by how busy it was in Gansbaai on the day we visited it seems as if there is an economic upsurge. This could be partially due to the extension of the shopping centre but can definitely be attributed to the increased demand for shark cage diving. Here are a few of my Kleinbaai photos.
