There are not many supper options in Hemel-en-Aarde wine country just outside Hermanus. But those few establishments that open their doors when the sun goes down are great. Romantic settings with fine food and even finer wines.
One such place is The Restaurant at Newton Johnson. Open only on Friday and Saturday nights during the holiday season, quality trumps quantity with a limited, seasonal menu. Guests are treated to a glass of bubbly and hors d’oeuvres in appreciation of the rolling vineyards framed by an Atlantic Ocean view. Chef Rickey Broekhoven offers a two course menu at R300 or three courses at R350. We enjoyed a vegetable salad followed by pan seared hake. The grand finale was finger licking chocolate chip cookies with white chocolate and peanut butter served with salted caramel ice cream. All washed down with the very complementary Newton Johnson Sauvignon Blanc. A yummy way to start the weekend.
