On New Year’s Day I took an Overberg road trip from Hermanus to Agulhas. With good company in the passenger seat I drove on country lanes and sang to hits on the radio. First to Stanford for coffee at the Ou Meul. It was pumping and you could sense the stress of potentially running out of stock with the influx of visitors. Two Americanos later and we were on the road to Napier. Nothing much was open there so Bredasdorp became the next stop. My favourite Bredasdorp spaces are:
- Table Cafe – A restaurant in the Lifestyle Centre with the best cakes and sweets in the Overberg. Guaranteed!
- Fiksie & Fantasie – 2nd hand bookshop does not do this place justice. It has quality used and collectable fiction & non-fiction.
- Meelmuis for 2nd hand furniture and stuff. A shop to snuffel at little gems and great finds.
The shops were closed and I had to press on to Agulhas. Arriving in thick holiday traffic in Struisbaai we took a shot left and visited the quaint harbour where a quick drink at Pelicans was just the thing to freshen up and take some nostalgic pictures of the small boats and blue waves. Finally, the lighthouse. The Cape Agulhas Lighthouse was the third lighthouse to be built in South Africa and is the second oldest still operating. It impresses me without fail. I love the red and white striped beacon at the southernmost point of Africa where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. It is such a landmark set in the natural beauty bordering between fynbos and sea. The car park was filled with people wanting to climb the steps and appreciate the view. A bit of a drive but worth the effort. A day trip to Agulhas can feel like a mini break.
