What a privilege to spend the Saturday at Rustenberg Wines in Stellenbosch attending the 5th Cape Wine Auction. The setting was lush and green and the venue decorated with opulence. R17,5m was raised in only a few hours and all of this will go to the children of the winelands. All for a better education and a better future. 27 organisations and 50000 children have benefitted to date from the generosity of individuals willing to contribute to this worthy cause. The auction is the brainchild of Warwick Wine Estate’s MD Mike Ratcliffe. Mike is joined in the organisation by other well-known wine personalities such as Wendy Applebaum and Elgin’s Paul Cluver.
I was particularly proud when only 2 Hermanus based charity lots topped R1m. Whalehaven and Creation Wines donated unique experiences which money can’t buy. The proceeds of these will most certainly benefit the Pebbles Project in Hemel-en-Aarde that was only started in 2017 but is already changing lives for the better.
