Functional Art at South Beach Durban

I love the sand sculptures on the Durban beach front. It puts to creative use something that’s there in abundance – sand – at a place that has many visitors walking by.

Hearing on a regular basis how we need to cultivate an entrepreneurial spirit in the tourism industry I believe these sand artists are masters of identifying an opportunity. This morning was particularly good when I saw how a sand sculpture was used to communicate a municipal notice. There are beach works happening on the promenade and everyone must be wondering what’s on. It’s an inconvenience not to walk on the beach but the inconvenience is mitigated with the creative sand art message that the Ethekwini Municipality is working to make the beach better.
