Ever heard of roosterkoek? It’s a bun that’s been cooked on fire. The result is bread’s version of a marshmallow. Soft and airy.

It’s been said that roosterkoek might very well be the first South African culinary creation. Who’s to argue? Today there are 2 Western Cape spots known for this dish – the garage at Buffelsjag River and R27 Roosterkoek on the West Coast road close to Yzerfontein.
