South Africa at the 91st Academy Awards

Oscars statutes were already adorning mantlepieces in Los Angeles by the time I watched the ceremony on MNet.  My viewing might have been delayed but I still appreciated the South African presence at this year’s awards.

Anele Mdoda conquered the red carpet with her entertaining quirps, movie knowledge and mention of South African boerewors and our quality wines.  Fingers crossed that there will be a Hemel-en-Aarde Pinot Noir at the 2020 function.

Charlize Theron went from blond to brunette and donned a pale blue Dior frock.  Quite prudish when viewed from the front but when the cameras caught her back it was a different story.  South African comedian Trevor Noah paid tribute to Black Panthers and made Wakanda real.  He also quoted Xhosa and those who understood would have known that Trevor really said “White people don’t know I’m lying.”

Richard E Grant a Swazi born, UCT educated actor was nominated this year and shared his South African heritage when interviewed.  John Kani was mentioned and some of the actors promised to visit South Africa again soon.

A golden evening enjoyed even down in southern Africa.
