Manina Baumann has been importing and collecting these silk embroidery pieces of art since 2012. Hermanus FynArts invited her to exhibit at their gallery and she told the interesting stories of empowerment and perseverance represented by the cloths.
One woman embroiders but the work involves the whole town. Weave, wash, dye, selection of designs based on museum pieces – all activities done by different individuals. Embroidery is meditation time and brings beauty, happiness and hospitality while keeping out the evil eye.
Manina’s daughter took inspiration from these fabrics to produce her own artworks that are framed and also at the FynArt’s Gallery. This is their 4th collaborative exhibition.
