Every year from June to November the Southern Right whales make a journey from the South Pole to the sheltered and shallow Walker Bay to give birth to their young. The whales come very close to the shore which make for good sightings and claiming the title for the Cape Whale Coast as the best land based whale watching spot in the world.
Yesterday I was privileged to go out on the bay with Ivanhoe Sea Safaris. We departed from Gansbaai Harbour and after 20 minutes on the smooth sea we spotted our first whale for the day. We saw Southern Right and Bryde’s whales. My day was made when one whale lifted his tail like a wave.
