Feasting at Madre, Stanford

Madre knows Overberg produce as well as she knows the food fancies of the locals. She was the inspirational force of Madre’s at Sir Robert Stanford, then at Stanford Manor and Eatery in Hermanus. It was only logical that she would gravitate back to Stanford and could not have found a better spot than that of Mariana’s at Owl Barn in du Toit Street Stanford previously owned by food personality Mariana Esterhuizen. Madre has been opened since September and takes bookings from Wednesday to Sundays for lunch and early dinner on Thursdays.

Despite the current road works between Hermanus and Stanford I headed along the Klein River with visiting friend Susie Charles for Sunday lunch. On arrival it was clear that the locals like hanging out at this new eatery. Every single table was taken by Cape Whale Coast residents. If a place is good enough for Gansbaai foodie Riaan Franken and De Hoop’s William Stephens it’s certainly the place to be.

Choosing from the menu was quite a job. First up – some nibbles of white bait disappeared with sips of Hemel-en-Aarde’s Creation Rosé. Then stuffed zucchini flowers oozing with taste before the main course of hake with fried potatoes and greens was devoured. Service was prompt, the food a feast and Madre was just Madre – the creative cook we’ve got to know with every plate served over the past many years.
