Overberg Country Roads to Sunday Lunch

Sundays are lazy days.  Days for lunching out with friends and sharing good wine. I was appreciative of the invitations to lunch on two consecutive Sundays to Overberg venues where I have not been in a while or not at all.

First up was Jan and Len’s birthday celebration at Gabrielskloof.  The Overberg views changed from green vineyards to straw coloured stripped maize fields.  Madame Lucy MCC and the best duck confit ever made this everything that a great Sunday should be.

Next up was a neighbour’s Celebration of Life Lunch at Driefontein Farm Restaurant – 18 kilometers on Riviersonderend’s side of Caledon and just 1 kilometer off the N2.  Typical farm set-up with very not-so-typical food.  Tables buckling under variety and quantity.  A help-yourself buffet with superb country food given a modern twist here and there.  Chef Herman de Kock made all dishes to the highest and most creative standard.   This venue only opens one Sunday per month and bookings are essential.  We arrived at 12:30 and left reluctantly at 17:00.  There was enough food to feed an army and the quality was fit for a queen.  The pears with gold leaf and peach pavlova were heavenly and paired well with the De Zalze wines we brought along as the restaurant is not licenced.

I can’t say when but I am going back to Driefontein for more of what I had for Sunday lunch.
